[Secret Korea - Seoul] Ep. 17 Sajik-Dong / YTN (Yes! Top News)

2017-11-15 2

In the bustling city of modern times,

there is a place that still maintains its old values.

The Korean spirit is filled within

the neighborhood known as Sajik-dong.

Sajik-dong is located to the west of Gyeongbokgung Palace.

Its name is derived from the Sajik altar the kings used to

perform ancestral rites for the peace and prosperity of the country.

It's said that they prayed for the comfortable lives

of the people to two deities.

If you follow the back paths of Sajikdan,

you will arrive at Hwanghakjeong,

an archery field of the Joseon Dynasty.

From ancient times,

Koreans were well known for their archery skills

and those archery traditions are still practiced today.

The elasticity of the 'Guk Gung' made

from rhino horns and bamboo are strong.

At the Guk Gung practice field,

you can even learn archery using a beginner's bow.

With a range of about 475 feet,

the Guk Gung fires farther than most traditional bows

and uses a target board rather than the competitive targets.

Below the Hwanghakjeong is the Guk Gung Gallery,

where various types of traditional bows,

including the Joseon Dynasty fire arrow rocket Singijeon,

and the ways archery guarded the history of Korea

and its people can be seen here.

With the gallery's collection of bows from around the world,

you can compare the various materials

and styles used in different countries.

At one end of the gallery is a workshop where bamboos

are straightened with heat to create arrows.

Koreans feel pride towards the bows and arrows created

by the delicate touch of a master craftsman.

Sajik-dong is a quiet neighborhood that is

still vibrant with the atmosphere of the past.

Why not enjoy and experience the long history of

the Korean spirit with traditional martial arts?
